Auditory stimuli elicit hippocampal neuronal responses during sleep
To investigate how hippocampal neurons code behaviorally salient stimuli, we recorded from neurons in the CA1 region of hippocampus in rats while they learned to associate the presence of sound with water reward. Rats learned to alternate between two reward ports at which, in 50% of the trials, sound stimuli were presented followed by water reward after a 3-s delay. Sound at the water port pred...
متن کاملIncreased Evoked Potentials to Arousing Auditory Stimuli during Sleep: Implication for the Understanding of Dream Recall
High dream recallers (HR) show a larger brain reactivity to auditory stimuli during wakefulness and sleep as compared to low dream recallers (LR) and also more intra-sleep wakefulness (ISW), but no other modification of the sleep macrostructure. To further understand the possible causal link between brain responses, ISW and dream recall, we investigated the sleep microstructure of HR and LR, an...
متن کاملSpecific Motor Response during Sleep to Sleep-administered Meaningful Suggestion: an Exploratory Investigation.
--Complex meaningful suggestions were given during various stages of physiological sleep as defined by EEG monitoring to 4 Ss high and 4 Ss low in hypnotizability. All the high hypnotizability Ss gave accurate behavioral responses while remaining asleep, but none of the low hypnotizability Ss did so. Specific response to sleep-administered suggestion was obtained only during Stage 1 periods.
متن کاملDiscrimination of behaviorally irrelevant auditory stimuli in stage II sleep.
In sleep, the brain responds to significant stimuli such as one's own name or loud tones. It is, however, not yet known whether in sleep, the brain's response can vary systematically with change in an irrelevant stimulus. Here, we varied the intensity of a 1000 Hz tone and recorded the neural response of the participants by using electroencephalography. The P200 component of the auditory-evoked...
متن کاملAuditory response to intracochlear electric stimuli following furosemide treatment.
The influence of functional hair cells on electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve is an important issue as individuals with significant residual hearing are now cochlear implant candidates. Previous work has shown that chemical deafening during the course of acute experiments changes the auditory nerve's responses to electrical stimulation [Third Quarterly Progress Report, NIH contract N01...
